An advancing storm front from the west is expected to bring high winds, thunderstorms and the possibility of large hail to Leflore County tonight, according to an official with the National Weather Service in Jackson.
“This evening and into early Thursday morning there will be a strong line of storms moving through the area. The greatest chance of tornadoes will be in the northwest Delta,” said David Cox, a meteorologist.
He said the cities of Greenville, Cleveland and Vicksburg are most likely to bear the brunt of the front as it moves east.
A flash flood watch, which indicates that conditions are favorable for flooding, is in effect in Leflore County through Thursday morning.
The system, Cox said, will bring 60-mph winds and has the possibility of producing quarter-sized or larger hail. After the front moves through, thunderstorms bringing 2 to 4 inches of rain are expected to follow, mostly likely between midnight and 4 a.m. Thursday, Cox said.
A wind advisory, for winds ranging between 35 and 40 mph, is in effect until 10 p.m. Cox said gusts of between 25 to 35 mph are expected throughout the day.
T.W. Cooper, director of the Greenwood-Leflore County Emergency Management Agency, said was closely monitoring the weather this morning.
“We always prepare for the worst and pray for the best,” he said.
Cox said the system should move out of Leflore County by noon Thursday.
