One of Greenwood’s favorite community choirs, the Harrison Delta Community Singers, will offer the gift of holiday music Sunday.
The choir’s annual Christmas concert will begin at 6 p.m. Sunday at Wesley United Methodist Church. The event is sponsored by the church’s women’s ministry, and everyone is invited at no charge.
The choir is composed of what its director, Albert Harrison, described as 25 to 30 veteran singers. “We have a lot of talent in that group,” he said.
Among those associated with the event are John Henry Johnson, president of the choir; Emma Lucas, president of Wesley’s women’s ministry; and the Rev. Mary Willis, Wesley’s pastor.
Members have been practicing lately for the concert, which has been presented for “more than 20 years or something like that,” Harrison said. The singers will include some of his former students, who were in the school choir when he taught at Amanda Elzy High School and Leflore County High School.
“They start texting me in advance, wanting to know. Many of these students that come back are some of the ones who got their four-year college education as a result of what they learned in high school,” he said.
“I retired in 2007 but unretired that year and went to St. Francis School. I am presently serving as minister of music at DeCell United Methodist Church.”
Sunday’s repertoire will include traditional Christmas carols, hymns and an arrangement of Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” as well as what Harrison described as “one of my favorite compositions, ‘Yonder Come a Star.’” The theme is “A musical celebrating the birth of Christ, who was born to save the world.”
