CARROLLTON — After 12 years of traveling and singing, the Promised Quartet will present its final concert for the Carrollton area at the Carrollton Baptist Church at 6 tonight.
The quartet has decided to take a break from singing after finishing this and several other concerts out of town that were previously scheduled. “We just feel like we need to take a break and stay at our own churches and let the Lord use us there,” Lisa Cheek explained.
“The quartet has been a great blessing,” Cheek said. “We’re a family. People in our area have been so supportive. I’d like to thank all the local people. Words can’t express how we appreciate the support we’ve been given.”
Others who have sung in Promised besides Cheek include her husband, David; his brother, Ronnie Cheek; and Melanie Woods.
Woods’ husband, Jason, is sound technician. Ronnie’s wife, Angie Cheek, also has helped with various aspects of the group.
In 1998, Brad Wiltshire approached his uncle, Michael “Pee Wee” Story, and asked him to sing bass. Then they asked Brad’s sister, Melanie, to sing tenor. Lisa became the lead, and the group got started. In 2007, Pee Wee was diagnosed with cancer, and he died Feb. 1.
The group has sung in many churches and other venues through Mississippi and surrounding states. They have shared the stage with renowned Southern gospel groups such as The Florida Boys, The McRaes, Paid in Full and The Hoppers. They have recorded four CDs, from which several singles were played on radio.
Melanie Woods says she’s sad to see it all end, but she is praying to be used in other ways. “We’ve been like a family. We’re not really breaking up, just retiring from traveling as a group. It’s been the best thing I’ve ever been a part of outside of family.”
