It’ll be “curtains” for Greenwood Little Theatre this weekend when it hosts its annual fundraiser to help replace the theater’s 50-year-old front curtain and rigging.
Two one-act plays will be presented — “Tracks” and “The Cinderella Syndrome” — at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday.
There is no set ticket price to attend the performances, but patrons are asked to dig as deep as possible to help the theater raise money for the new equipment.
The theater’s board members have wanted to replace the old curtain for quite some time, but after the rigging broke completely during the final performance of the latest GLT production, “No Time For Sergeants,” the need is greater than ever.
“This is no longer a dream of mine. It is a necessity if we are to continue to provide quality entertainment for the Greenwood area,” said Cathy Roberts, who is directing both of the one-act plays.
Stacey Joiner, one of the cast members for “The Cinderella Syndrome,” said the rigging currently is inoperable, but luckily it will not be needed this weekend because both of the plays are one-acts.
The first play, “Tracks,” will be performed by Pillow Academy’s drama students. They also presented the play at the Mississippi Theatre Association North Regional Competition and are giving back to GLT by performing it again for the fundraiser.
“We would not have a drama program at Pillow were it not for the assistance provided by members of GLT,” aid Katie Acosta, a cast member for “Tracks.” “Not only do the adults include us in GLT performances, but they build sets, provide costumes and assist us with all Pillow Academy productions.”
Other cast members include Brant Boldon, Katelin Roberts, Georgia Hart Smith, Terry Toole, Gillon Wells, Lawson Daves, Hannah Graham, Drew Miller, Marliegh McCrimmon and K K Cade. The crew members are Rushil Randive and Matthew Wong.
“Tracks,” directed by Peter Tarsi, is the story of a group of people who meet in a subway station and realize they are deceased. They try to come to grips with their demise and questions what their final destination in the afterlife will be.
“The Cinderella Syndrome,” written by V. Glasgow Koste, is a comedic take-off on “Cinderella” that turns its premise around.
In “The Cinderella Syndrome,” Cinderella is the one with the attitude problem, while the stepmother and stepsisters are the kind-hearted ones — and no one wants to go to the ball.
Cast members include Ellie Aldridge, Jessica Roberts and Elaine Tharpe, and Steven Gray and Joiner as the two stepsisters.
“You know how they say ‘the ugly stepsisters’? Well, you’ve certainly got them here,” Joiner said.
Roberts said GLT fans will not want to miss seeing the two men in drag in “The Cinderella Syndrome.”
“Stacey and Steven are an absolute scream,” she said. “I’m very very proud of it. It’s one of the funniest things that’s ever been on that stage.”
There will be an intermission between the two plays.
