It’s official. Dot Glenn will not be a candidate for the Greenwood City Council.
Glenn did not file by Monday’s deadline a court challenge of the Leflore County Democratic Executive Committee’s decision to disqualify her candidacy in Ward 5 because it determined she was not a resident of the district.
The Democratic Executive Committee took up the issue after Andrew Powell challenged Glenn’s residency in the ward.
Following a hearing in which Glenn and Powell could present evidence, the Democratic Executive Committee requested on March 20 that Greenwood City Clerk Nick Joseph remove Glenn’s name from the May 2 primary ballot.
The letter, signed by Robert Sims, chairman of the executive committee, said Glenn’s “failure to present convincing facts in support of residency” prompted the request.
Neither Glenn nor Powell could be reached for comment this morning.
This is the second consecutive election in which Glenn has run afoul of the Mississippi residency requirements for candidates for municipal office.
Powell successfully challenged her election to the Ward 5 seat in 2013.
A judicial tribunal ruled that Glenn did not live in the ward and ordered a runoff between Powell and Norman Smith.
In July 2013, the Mississippi Supreme Court issued a stay, allowing Glenn to join the council.
In October 2014, the state Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that Glenn be removed and a special election be held.
In December 2014, Powell won by one vote over Norman Smith, who had died about two weeks earlier.
Powell will face Eddie Lee Brown in the May 2 primary.
