A free financial literacy course will give interested residents a few tips on better managing bills and money.
The five-week course, which kicks off Tuesday at Greenwood Utilities, will give participants a rundown on some financial skills to improve their personal finances, including tips on setting up a bank account, building and fixing credit, applying for loans, balancing a check book and managing bills and debt.
The course is being offered by a number of area banks, including State Bank & Trust, Planter’s Bank and the Bank of Commerce as well as Guarantee Bank & Trust Co. of Belzoni.
The course will meet Tuesday at the new Greenwood Utilities Water Department building near Henderson Station, 2201 River Road Extended, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.
Larry Griggs, vice president of operations at Greenwood Utilities, said the public utility company reached out to the banks to host the course as a service to its customers, especially those that might currently struggle each month to pay their bills.
“We found out that banks were offering this kind of financial workshop free to the general public, so we’re just hoping that as many people as possible can take advantage of it,” Griggs said.
To register for the course, contact Larry Griggs at 453-7234; Rieko Wells at (601) 454-3888 or Ernestine Bilbrew at (601) 559-7131.
Although advanced registration is preferred, Griggs said that registration is also possible at the first meeting on Tuesday.
