Former U.S. Sen. Trent Lott, R-Miss., will speak Saturday night at a dinner of the St. Andrew Society of North Mississippi.
The dinner will be at 7 p.m. at the Greenwood Country Club. It is open only to the society’s members and supporters and a few special guests, said Bill Johnston, president of the North Mississippi chapter.
Lott will also attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Greenwood-Leflore Airport’s control tower at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Lott, 71, served in the U.S. Senate from January 1989 to December 2007, twice as majority leader.
Prior to that, he served in the U.S. House of Representatives from January 1973 to January 1989. He was House minority whip from January 1981 to January 1989.
The North Mississippi chapter of the St. Andrew Society has only been in existence since 2009, but the society was first established in colonial times by those with Scotch and Scotch-Irish ancestry.
It was intended to help people who had just come to this country, Johnston said. Now it is a “symbolic” society that is “open to anyone who appreciates Scottish heritage, Scottish things and Scotch whisky,” he said.
Johnston said Lott played a critical role in the U.S. Senate’s declaring of April 6 as National Tartan Day in 1998
The North Mississippi chapter has about 50 members.
