The Downtown Greenwood Farmers Market will begin another season of offering fresh produce and other homemade goods when it opens Saturday morning.
The market is on the corner of Howard Street and Carrollton Avenue. Its offerings include local in-season produce, baked goods and a host of other items.
Anyone may stop by between 8 a.m. and noon any Saturday until the end of September.
Shoppers can expect to find early season vegetables such as onions and squash, along with fresh farm eggs and canned jams and jellies.
“All are locally grown and made,” said market manager Beth Stevens, who is also the executive director of the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce.
Stevens said Saturday’s opening would be a “soft opening,” meaning there would be no activities — but there will be “lots of activities planned throughout the season.”
Those are expected to include a cooking demonstration, free health screenings and other family-oriented events. The market plans to team with Delta State University’s Nursing Department to promote wellness. The purpose of the market and its activities is to teach Greenwood families to be healthy, Stevens said.
The market has about 12 to 15 vendors on an average weekend. Since it is certified by the state of Mississippi, everything must be of a certain standard to be sold.
“People know they are getting things of good quality when they shop at the market,” Stevens said.
Anyone wanting to sell goods may call the Chamber of Commerce at A53-4152. A vendors’ table is $10.
