Each year since 1970, communities nationwide have celebrated Earth Day on April 22.
This year, Greenwood is joining them with a celebration organized by ArtPlace.
“A few of us normally try to do something on Earth Day,” said Hart Henson, ArtPlace’s executive director. “We have gone down to the (Yazoo River) Trail, taken our lunch down there, that kind of thing.”
For this Earth Day, they saw a chance to do more. Henson and others — teachers, board members — decided to hold three days of activities featuring the Yazoo River Trail, food, art and art classes and recycling.
She said ArtPlace organizers already wanted to hold events for Lindsay Wilson of Starkville, who is knowledgeable about herbs and plants and how they are used for better health.
Also, “Pat Brown had already told us she wanted to do a eco-dye workshop,” Henson said. Brown is a professor emeritus at Delta State University.
Others were asked to contribute. They including fused-glass artist C.J. Coleman, cookbook writer Martha Foose and Greenwood’s recycling manager, Anne Marie Gregory.
“We thought it fitting to have all of that centered around Earth Day and kind of built from there,” Henson said.
