The Leflore County School District will propose an increase in ad valorem taxes to address funding needs for the 2014-2015 school year.
Conservator Robert Strebeck said Monday during the district’s normal monthly business session that the district’s budget for the upcoming year is still being finalized.
He declined to go into specifics about the budget.
A public hearing on the proposed budget is scheduled for 6 p.m. Aug. 5 at the district’s Educational Services Building at 1901 U.S. 82.
The district, which was taken over by the state Department of Education in October, has been cutting costs to get its finances in better shape for the upcoming school year.
The first day for faculty and staff is Aug. 1. The first day of class for students is Aug. 7.
On Monday, Strebeck approved:
• The hiring of Brookhaven attorney Nathaniel Armistad as the district’s attorney for the 2014-15 school year.
• The hiring of Suzanne Smith to serve as the district’s financial adviser from July 1 through Dec. 31.
• The elementary and secondary student handbooks for the upcoming school year.
• The transfer of a lease for Lot No. 21 of the Braley Campsite from Joyce Randall to Cadium LLC. All the required taxes and rent have been paid.
• The resignations of Velenea M. Evans (effective July 8), Phillip West (effective June 19), Jan Vining (effective July 7), Vanessa Hines (effective June 30), Sharon Bovan (effective July 2) and Regina R. Abari (effective July 22).
