The Greenwood Public School District is preparing to reapply for competitive grants for Greenwood High, Greenwood Middle and Threadgill Elementary schools.
If successful, the four-year grants would be used to build teacher capacity, provide professional development for teachers, and allow for consider of signing bonuses for recruiting teachers, said Dr. Jennifer Wilson, the district’s superintendent.
In December, the district applied for a grant that, if awarded, would have applied only to Greenwood High School, she said. Charles Johnson, the district’s director of federal programs, said that none of the grant applications in the first round were approved for consideration by the state Department of Education.
He said, based upon enrollment data, Greenwood High, Greenwood Middle and Threadgill are now eligible to apply for the second round. The application is due May 8.
If successful, Wilson said, the district will be notified in June and implementation of the grant will begin July 1.
The board also approved April updates to the district’s Schools-at-Risk Action Plans for Threadgill and Greenwood Middle. That program also receives federal funding.
Also Thursday, the board met for 30 minutes behind closed doors to discuss litigation and personnel matters. No action was taken, Board President Deirdre Mayes said.
In other action, the board approved:
• The 2017-2018 school calendar.
• The release of two students from the district. Both families requested the releases for personal reasons, Wilson said.
• The 2017-2018 central office salary scale and the 2017-2018 scale for principals, directors and curriculum specialists.
• The 2016-2017 personnel recommendations and the 2017-2018 personnel recommendations.
