Kathryn Lucas, who is running Greenwood COVID Response, is continuing to ask for donations of food, paper products and money to help financially challenged individuals and families in the community.
“We know if less people have to go out to get their basic needs, especially those of us who are more at risk of contracting the novel coronavirus, the more we are flattening the curve,” she said.
When COVID Response was formed, it helped get lunches to school children who might be missing meals because schools closed March 16. Before shelter-in-place took effect April 3, it expanded its aid to others.
Recently, the Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District revived its Grab & Go meals for all school-age children. The district offers the packaged breakfasts and lunches from 11 a.m. until 1:15 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at Claudine Brown Elementary, East Elementary, Threadgill Elementary, Greenwood Middle and Leflore County High schools. Those who drive through on both days will receive enough for one work week. The children must be present.
Meanwhile, COVID Response volunteers are taking food and supplies where needed.
“We are providing and delivering a week’s worth of food and COVID Care Kits for elders, families and individuals with limited resources,” Lucas said.
She is a third-year medical student at University of Mississippi Medical Center who is at home in Greenwood and taking classes online because of the novel coronavirus outbreak.
The kits are packed with products needed at home, such as toilet paper and disinfectant.
To volunteer, help or donate, send email to covid19greenwoodfood@gmail.com, she said.
