The Greenwood City Council moved quickly on a number of law-enforcement-related grants and grant applications at Tuesday’s meeting.
The council held a required public hearing on an Edward Byrne Memorial Assistance Grant for $17,268 before voting and approving it. That grant will be used for the purchase of narrow-band radios, Police Chief Henry Purnell said.
Other police-related items approved Tuesday include:
nApplying to the Mississippi Office of Highway Safety for a grant for a seat-belt enforcement campaign. The $20,000 grant would go to pay the salaries of officers assigned to enforcement.
nApplying for and accepting a state Department of Public Safety grant for DUI enforcement campaigns in the amount of $71,063.
nAuthorized the purchase of a new 2011 Ford Crown Victoria at the state contract price of $28,200. It will be used to replace a vehicle with high mileage.
nAuthorizing the Police Department to apply for a Bureau of Justice Assistance Grant to cover 50 percent of the cost of purchasing 17 bullet-resistant vests.
nThe sale of a used police car to the city of Ethel.
In other action, the council confirmed Joanne Branham to the Greenwood Tree Board for Ward 7.
The council also approved:
• The purchase of a $60,912 horizontal baler to use in recycling.
• A special use exception to the C-3 Highway Commercial District for a church located in the 1600 block of Carrollton Avenue.
• A Certificate of Appropriateness to Johnny Brown for the renovation of a façade located at 313 Carrollton Ave.
