The Greenwood City Council unanimously approved a zoning variance Tuesday for the construction of a funeral home on Sgt. John A. Pittman Drive.
The 8,000-square-foot cross-shaped building is to sit on a wooded four-acre tract of land just west of the Elks Lodge No. 854, located at 1010 Sgt. John A. Pittman Drive. It will be known as the Greenwood Funeral Home, said Kenneth R. Thompson Jr., who is the contractor.
Thompson told the council he intends to utilize a large number of oak trees that are currently on the site in the design. He said the building would be state-of-the-art and “serve as an example of what the new building code requires.”
The Greenwood Planning Commission had already approved the project.
Ward 1’s Johnny Jennings, who represents the area where the funeral home will be built, said he’s heard no complaints about the project from residents.
Thompson, who is heavily involved with the operation of Stribling Park, also located on Sgt. John A. Pittman Drive, asked the council to consider providing free garbage pickup for the park. He noted that the park, which is open to all, recently hosted a state youth tournament, which drew a large number of visitors to the city.
After getting an initial sign the council would consider his request, Thompson also asked for two motor gradings of the park’s parking lot per year.
In other action, the council approved:
nAccepting a bid from P&S Construction LLC for the demolition of 23 properties and 16 dilapidated structures. The bid of $46,597 was the lowest and best of three bids for the work.
nAuthorizing the issuance of taxable general obligation bonds in the amount of $1.26 million to raise money for the refunding of the city’s outstanding bonds for the Milwaukee Electric Tool Corp. project dated Dec. 1, 2002, and paying the costs of issuance of the bonds.
