The Greenwood City Council unanimously approved issuing $3 million in bonds for renovating the Police Department headquarters.
The vote came at the end of Tuesday’s regular meeting.
Mayor Carolyn McAdams said the Main Street building, which was built in 1967, has a number of issues, including faulty wiring, asbestos, lead-based paint and a main floor that is in danger of collapsing.
In addition, the building, which also houses the city Municipal Court, does not have public restrooms. The ones it does have do not meet the federal American with Disabilities Act requirements.
McAdams pegged the renovations at around $2.5 million. She said the additional funding will be needed for relocating the department’s headquarters while the renovations are being done.
The mayor said she is weighing several locations where the department could be housed but declined to identify them.
Ward 6’s David Jordan asked McAdams what the city’s bonding capacity was. McAdams said it stood at $18 million, more than enough to cover the renovations.
The council approved the law firms of Butler Snow of Jackson and Whittington, Brock and Swayze of Greenwood to handle the bond issuance for the police headquarters bonds.
It also approved the firms for the city’s Tax Increment Financing bond issuance for The Landing convenience store, which opened earlier this year. Bonds for that project will be for $1.2 million.
Also Tuesday, the council approved:
• A $1.13 million bid from APAC for the overlaying of city streets.
nPermitting C Spire to use city rights of way for a fiber optic cable. The work will start near the intersection of Tallahatchie Street and U.S. 82 and will expand throughout the city.
• The rezoning of 1019 McLean St. from residential to neighborhood commercial. The property will still require a conditional use permit issued by the Greenwood Planning Commission.
• The rezoning of 1103 Ave. D from multi-family residential to neighborhood commercial. The property will still require a zoning variance issued by the Greenwood Planning Commission.
The council was presented a draft of a proposed zoning and development code but took no action on it.
