The third time was indeed the charm for both Annie Conley and Viola Williams.
Both women easily beat their incumbent opponents, according to official results released Saturday afternoon.
In the Leflore County tax collector’s race, Conley, a 54-year-old Democrat, defeated independent Sara Kenwright, 80, by 315 votes, 4,488 to 4,173 or 52 percent to 48 percent.
In the Leflore County superintendent of education race, independent Williams beat Democratic incumbent Jean Hall by 458 votes, 2,257 to 1,799 or 56 percent to 44 percent.
Kenwright was cautious this morning in congratulating her opponent.
“If these results hold, I wish Mrs. Conley and Leflore County the best,” she said.
Conley could not be reached for comment this morning.
Conley works in the Community Service Learning Department at Mississippi Valley State University.
Kenwright thanked her supporters.
“I’ve enjoyed serving Leflore County for 24 years. Hopefully, Mrs. Conley will continue to run an honest and efficient office,” she said.
Williams, who once served as principal of Ruleville Middle, could not be reached for comment.
Hall, who has served in the district for 27 years, was touring schools this morning and also could not be reached.
