Lovers of Corvettes and classic cars converged on Greenwood’s Whittington Park Saturday for the second annual Mid-Delta Corvette Club’s Car, Motorcycle and Truck Show.
Ruben Howard of Cleveland brought his showroom new 1956 Oldsmobile Rocket 88.
“We’ve been at Thunder on Water; Middleton, Tennessee; Tunica, Mississippi, a number of places. This is the first time we’ve come over here,” he said.
Hudson, a 1969 graduate of Mississippi Valley State University, said he’s owned his Oldsmobile, which has 84,000 miles on it, for the past four years.
Fellow collector Lonnie Jennings also of Cleveland, brought his restored 1937 Packard.
The car required some work, but was largely ready to go. “I did all the suspension and all the electrical work, stuff like that,” he said.
The 68-year-old vehicle was well built.
“It’s all complete. No rust. It’s got a flat-head six in it and a three-speed on the floor,” Jennings said.
Lloyd Washington’s ride, a 2015 Corvette, was a little newer.
Washington, of Byhalia, was cleaning the dust off the windshield of the gleaming car prior to the start of Saturday’s show.
“This is the first time I’ve been to the car show here. I’ve been to Greenwood before though,” he said.
J.W. Weddington, a member of the Chicago Crossroads Corvette Club, drove a motorcycle to the event Saturday as part of an extended road trip.
“I rode from Chicago to South Carolina to a bikers roundup, the Tail of the Dragon, on the way here, which is something else. That’s 318 turns in 11 miles,” he said of the highway, which is a stretch of U.S. 129 at the Tennessee-North Carolina line.
Weddington said came last year in his Corvette with his fellow club members.
Robert Williams, activity director for Mid-Delta, said Saturday afternoon the crowds were only going to get bigger.
“I think it is shaping up to be pretty good. We have five or six more clubs on their way,” he said.
