The sixth annual City of Greenwood Employee Appreciation Picnic, set for Friday at the city’s boat landing, is intended to honor employees for their hard work and dedication.
The picnic is scheduled to begin at noon. Most city employees will be off work in order to attend the event with their families.
“Our employees do so many wonderful things,” said Ward 4 City Councilman Charles McCoy, who has spent some of his free time organizing the event. “They do an outstanding job. We’d like to show them that we appreciate them. We can’t always give them a raise.”
The picnic was started under the administration of former Mayor Harry Smith. It is sponsored by homegrown businesses, and no city money is used to put it on, McCoy said.
He said it takes roughly six months to plan the event.
Mayor Carolyn McAdams said McCoy works hard on the preparations.
“I have to give all the credit to Charles for this,” she said. “He gets the vendors. He sets it up.”
The employees deserve the recognition, and the event also is intended to offer their families a good time, she said.
“We want to say, ‘Thank you for their hard work,’” she said.
The mayor said inflatables will be set up for youngsters. If it’s warm enough, the city’s splash pad may be activated.
Food will include hot dogs and hamburgers. In addition, Larry’s Fish House will provide fried catfish.
Even though most employees will be at the picnic, the city’s Fire and Police Departments will be fully staffed. Relief crews will enable all employees to spend some time at the picnic.
McAdams said the vendors make the picnic possible.
“Without them, we wouldn’t be able to have it,” she said.
