Greenwood city employees will be celebrating Friday at the fifth annual Greenwood Employee Appreciation Day Picnic.
The picnic will take place at 1 p.m. at the municipal boat landing.
Ward 4 Councilman Charles McCoy, who first came up with the idea of having the picnic, said it’s “a good way to show the employees that we appreciate their work.”
No public money is being used for the event, McCoy said. It is funded entirely through corporate and individual sponsorships.
City employees who are not assigned to work shifts on Friday afternoon will be given the rest of the day off.
McCoy said he hopes employees left to staff essential city services will have food taken to them.
McCoy said the picnic will feature catfish and all the trimmings, courtesy of Larry’s Catfish House, as well as hamburgers, hot dogs and plenty of ice cream.
He said there will be plenty of games for young and old alike. In addition, cash prizes will be given away.
Mayor Carolyn McAdams said she hopes employees who are on duty during the picnic will be relieved by those who are not on duty.
“We’re hoping that everyone will be relieved and can enjoy the picnic. It’s a joyous, great collaboration of all the departments,” she said.
McCoy said the picnic would have never gotten off the ground without the help of the sponsors.
“Most of them have been doing it for five years straight,” he said.
