St. John’s United Methodist Church will deliver about 250 meals to the elderly and the disabled on Friday for Christmas.
Volunteers will deliver the meals from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., said Annette Mize, the mission chairperson at St. John’s.
The effort actually began months ago, when the church began dropping off referral forms at doctor’s offices, pharmacies and home health agencies.
“Those agencies are actually the best for determining who needs a meal on Christmas Day,” said Debbie Oxnam, who began the church’s Christmas meal delivery program in 2004.
This year’s meal, prepared by Mize and Oxnam, will include ham, green beans, yams and rolls. The ladies of the church will make desserts.
Meals also will be delivered to Golden Age Nursing Home and Beacon Harbor, Mize said.
“We also take it to people who are working on Christmas Day, such as employees at convenience stores, fire departments and police departments,” Mize said.
She said preparations for the meal will begin this evening. “We cook overnight. We start again on Christmas morning.”
With the names and addresses of the recipients in hand, church members Becky and Jim Palmer plot each one out on a map to help make the drivers’ rounds a little easier, Mize said.
