Main Street Greenwood recently received an award for its 2008 “Christmas in the Delta” promotional poster.
The “Spirit of Main Street — Promotions” award was presented last week during a Blues Reception and Annual Awards Luncheon at the Old Capitol Inn in Jackson. The event also celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Mississippi Main Street Association.
MMSA Executive Director Bob Wilson and current Board President Chuck Ueltschey presented awards to various MMSA communities and member towns.
The project, which was helmed by Main Street Greenwood, the Greenwood Convention and Visitor’s Bureau and the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce, was a collaborative effort between eight Delta towns and the B.B. King Museum and Delta Interpretive Center.
“The award was presented to Main Street Greenwood, but it was totally a joint effort, so I want everyone to get credit,” said Lise Foy, executive director of Main Street Greenwood.
The poster contained a list of holiday activities scheduled in several Delta communities. The design and printing costs were split evenly among the cities, and each community received 1,000 posters to display.
Hammons and Associates designed the posters, and the distribution was handled through the Planters Bank courier system.
Foy said it was the first time she had attempted a joint promotion with other Delta communities, and she was glad it turned out so well.
“I’m really proud to have been a part of such a successful collaborative project, and I hope we can work with the other Delta communities again,” she said.
Also at the MMSA Blues Reception, a special-edition Peavey Guitar was unveiled as part of the 20th anniversary celebration. The body of the guitar features a collage of photographs from Main Street towns across the state.
For the next 12 months, the guitar will travel to MMSA communities, and raffle tickets to win the guitar will be sold. The drawing will be held at next year’s MMSA Awards Luncheon on June 24, 2010. Proceeds will benefit the Charles O. Beasley Annual Scholarship fund.
MMSA, a program of the Mississippi Development Authority, has 56 active community programs throughout the state, as well as more than 40 Downtown Network and Association member communities.
