CAN residents of Greenwood collect more than they did in the 2008 food drive?
From 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church will sponsor its 21st annual “Youth CAN Make a Difference Food Drive.” They hope to beat last year’s total of 12,000 cans.
“Last year, we counted how many cans we got when the youth got back, but people kept bringing them in,” said Flo Abraham, president of the Community Food Pantry. “It was unreal to see how generous the community has been.”
Angela Malouf, middle school youth director at Immaculate Heart of Mary, said different churches collect throughout the year but this is one of the biggest drives of the year. It helps the pantry provide food to its 350 families.
“Every little bit helps the pantry,” Malouf said.
Members of area youth groups will gather at Immaculate Heart of Mary before receiving their maps and heading out into the community to collect door-to-door.
Residents within the Greenwood city limits may place donations on their front porch or next to their mailbox to be picked up.
“It is a lot easier if people already have them in a bag, but we will collect them no matter what,” Malouf said.
Any church youth group is invited to participate in the annual event. To learn more or sign up, contact Anthony Ola at 453-1462 or the church office at 453-3980.
