Candidates in Leflore and Carroll counties have been making their last-minute appeals to voters before Tuesday’s primaries.
Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Party runoff elections, in needed, will be held Aug. 25.
Under state law, those voting in either the Republican and Democratic primaries must show photo identification.
Curbside voting for the elderly and the disabled will be available Tuesday.
Carroll County Circuit Clerk Durward Stanton said this morning his office is as “ready as we can be” for Tuesday’s election.
Sam Abraham, a Republican running for the District 1 supervisor’s seat, said he’s been busy campaigning in the district.
Abraham, 64, Leflore County’s outgoing chancery clerk, is facing Joe Fennell, 60, a Minter City farmer.
“I’ve walked door to door, so I’m hoping it is going to be a good turnout,” Abraham said.
Fennell said he feels encouraged heading into Tuesday’s contest.
“I think it is going to be a good race,” he said.
Both Abraham and Fennell said they’ve enjoyed meeting the voters on a personal level.
This is Fennell’s first try for political office. He said his father, J.W. Fennell, ran several times for sheriff in Tallahatchie County.
For his campaign, Fennell has relied on his father; his mother, Yvonne, a longtime Greenwood educator; and his brother, Kelly, for support.
“I know what it is to get out and talk to people,” he said.
Abraham said he also has been well received by the voters.
“I’m real encouraged. Hopefully, I’ll be the victor,” he said.
In the five-way race for Carroll County Sheriff, incumbent Jerry Carver said he had a lot on his plate heading into Tuesday’s election.
Carver, 68, faces Clint Walker, Grant Gammill, Scott Beck and Art Hicks in the Democratic primary.
Asked if he felt the voters would support his re-election, Carver said, “I hope they will. I’ve always tried to do the best I could.”
Walker, 41, a former agent with the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, said his campaign is based entirely on his faith.
Asked how he felt heading into Tuesday, Walker replied, “I’m doing what the Lord asked me to do. The outcome will be the outcome that the Lord designed.”
