Two more candidates have entered the campaign for the Leflore County Board of Supervisors this fall, and a Greenwood school resource officer will once again campaign for Leflore County sheriff.
Demetrice Bedell, the Greenwood School District’s chief school resource officer, has filed to run for sheriff against incumbent Ricky Banks.
Bedell unsuccessfully challenged Banks in 2011. Banks will be running for his 10th term in November.
Troy Brown Jr., a Greenwood native and teacher in Humphreys County, has filed paperwork to run in District 3 against incumbent Supervisor Anjuan Brown.
John Paul “J.P.” Walker, a Greenwood insurance broker, will run for the District 1 seat now occupied by Phil Wolfe.
Wolfe, who has served on the board since 1991, announced earlier this month that he won’t be seeking re-election. His seat represents most of North Greenwood as well as Minter City.
Walker is the only candidate so far to file paperwork to run for the seat. Candidates have until Feb. 27 to file to run for office on this fall’s ballot, which will include state and county offices.
Troy Brown Jr., the son of former Greenwood-Leflore Emergency Management Director Troy Brown Sr., filed his intent to challenge current Board President Anjuan Brown.
Brown Sr. was fired by the Board of Supervisors after a controversial tenure of less than six months on the job. Brown Sr. clashed repeatedly with Chancery Clerk Sam Abraham and on several occasions leveled public criticism at Abraham over alleged meddling in his department.
Candidates have already filed to challenge two other supervisors as well.
T.W. Cooper, Brown Sr.’s predecessor as emergency management director, has filed to run against current District 4 Supervisor Wayne Self.
In District 5, former Leflore County Supervisor Larry “Kite” Johnson will challenge two-term incumbent Robert Collins in a bid to retake the seat Collins claimed from him in 2007.
