The rain might have affected numbers at this year’s Youth CAN Make a Difference Food Drive, but it certainly didn’t dampen the enthusiasm of those who turned out Sunday.
The weather also didn’t deter the giving spirit in Greenwood.
In all, youth groups from a number of area churches collected 11,430 cans for the Community Food Pantry, a total that far exceeded the goal.
Last year the group collected 9,600 cans. Organizers feared the rain might hold back donations. Instead, it was one of their best years.
Several youth groups had to call for backup after collecting far too many cans to carry.
“There were a lot of rain-soaked kids, but they sure had a good spirit,” said Anthony Ola, one of the adult organizers of the drive.
Still, Ola said he’s sure the street teams missed some houses. Anyone with canned goods or non-perishable food items to donate in encouraged to bring them to Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, at 310 Henderson St., or directly to the Community Food Pantry on Browning Road.
