For the 2018-19 school year, Interim Superintendent James Johnson-Waldington reports big changes at Claudine Brown Elementary School in the southeastern part of the county, the smallest school in the Leflore County School District.
For the first time in the school’s history, it will have a cafeteria in which food can be prepared on site.
“In the past, breakfasts and lunches for the students at Claudine Brown have been prepared at Amanda Elzy High School and brought to them to be served in the dining area,” Johnson-Waldington said in an email exchange.
“With this renovation, the cafeteria will be fully functional for the first time.”
The Leflore County School District Office of Child Nutrition is overseeing the renovation of the cafeteria and will see that food services are fully staffed for two meals per day, all prepared on site.
That job will be even bigger than in years past because Claudine Brown is expanding this year to include fourth-grade students. It operated before as a kindergarten through third-grade school. “This means that the rising fourth-graders at Claudine Brown will stay on that campus instead of moving to East Elementary School,” Johnson-Waldington said.
The decision was made in part because of a declining student population that allowed the school to accommodate an additional grade level.
Johnson-Waldington said faculty and staff are excited about the change “because it allows them another school term to prepare their students for the changes they will face in upper elementary at East Elementary School.”
Registration for Leflore County Schools will be held from next Monday through Thursday. Check the website at www.lefcsd.org for registration times and required identification to enroll a child in school.
The district will be holding substitute teacher training on Friday at 9 a.m. To be considered for a substitute teacher position, training participants must have completed at least two years of college or obtained an associate’s degree (or higher), or they must pass the ACT WorkKeys assessment used by the state of Mississippi, and must have a valid driver’s license and Social Security card.
The training will take place at the Leflore County Educational Services Building at 1901 U.S. 82 W. For more information, contact Cynthia House at human resources, 453-8566.
The first full day of classes in the district will be Aug. 8.
