Clint and Travis Dunn have been named the Young Farmers of the Year for 2013.
The brothers were honored at AgFest 2013 Tuesday night at the Leflore County Civic Center.
They are the second set of brothers so honored by the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce’s Agricultural Committee. David and Tom Grossman received the award in 2000.
The brothers, fourth-generation farmers, work 5,000 acres of cropland with their father, Dwight, and live on the family farm between Greenwood and Itta Bena.
Clint said the recognition Tuesday night was a great honor.
“We didn’t know about it. We’re humbled for being nominated,” he said.
Clint, 33, and his wife, Aimee, have a son, Jackson, 5, and a daughter, Addison, 3.
Travis, 32, and his wife, Paige, have a daughter, Emma Kate, 2.
Clint said the experience of being recognized was humbling.
“It’s not necessarily about us,” he said. “It’s more about our parents, our aunts and uncles and our grandparents. We’re a product of our surroundings.”
The brothers began farming in 2004 as part of Dunn Farm Partnerships, a family company.
They’ve concentrated on growing corn, cotton, soybeans and rice, according to Jerry Singleton, an agent with the Leflore County Extension Service.
Travis said he was honored by the recognition from the farming community. Clint said he hopes that his children will develop a love of the land in time and will become the family’s fifth generation of farmers.
“That’s a legacy,” he said.
