The Greenwood school district won’t increase taxes next year, and the superintendent’s son will still have a job.
That’s the biggest news to come out of a school board meeting Tuesday evening.
Superintendent Margie Pulley said budget figures are still early, but they know that a property tax increase for city residents won’t be required during 2012-2013.
A preliminary budget will be presented to the school board next month, she said.
Later in the meeting, Pulley left the room, and the board appointed Assistant Superintendent Jennifer Wilson to make a personnel recommendation.
Wilson recommended that Kenneth Pulley, one of Margie Pulley’s twin sons, be made director of the district’s alternative school. She said it’s not a conflict of interest because he will report to Greenwood High Principal Percy Powell.
All four board members — George Ellis, Lora Evans, Bill Clay and Kathy Whicker — voted to hire Kenneth Pulley.
He has served as the interim head of the alternative school since Jan. 5 following the board’s decision to hire him in December.
Also Tuesday,
• Wilson said the district is working on a three-year strategic plan. Committees made up of teachers, parents, students and administrators are developing it and will present the finished plan to the school board in June.
• Pulley said state exams are over and “we feel confident that our students performed well on these tests.” The first results will come available to administrators in June, she said.
• The board approved requiring all seventh graders to have a whooping cough vaccine — as the state is now mandating — beginning at the start of school in August.
