CARROLLTON — Carroll County supervisors will hear about the progress of redistricting for the county Wednesday, when a representative from the Stennis Institute of Mississippi State University will be on hand to talk with them.
The meeting will be in Vaiden at 9 a.m. at the courthouse. The meeting is open to the public.
Redistricting was supposed to take place this year. But supervisors decided they didn’t have enough time between when they received census data and the qualifying date for the 2011 election.
Supervisors in many counties, including Leflore County, also postponed redistricting.
At their regular meeting in Vaiden next Monday, supervisors will consider the adding and deleting of county roads and decide on a public hearing date.
After discussion with county engineer Robert Willis and attorney Liz Davis Monday, they decided holding a public hearing would be the best way to make sure no laws were violated in any changes made.
Beat 1 Supervisor Terry Herbert, Beat 3 Supervisor Marvin Coward, Beat 4 Supervisor James “Bobby” Cobbins and Beat 5 supervisor Rickie Corley all expressed their intention to make changes.
Also Monday, the board:
• Approved two 16th Section commercial leases — one to Joey and Susan Welch and one to Vaiden Baptist Church.
• Considered a request from Superintendent of Education Billy Joe Ferguson to look into a water problem that has caused flooding in the school district’s central office. The board agreed to try to correct the problem.
• Accepted a formal resignation from Beat 4 Supervisor Cobbins, who was defeated in the Democratic primary by Claude Fluker. Cobbins thanked the board for their cooperation and said, “It was a pleasure serving the people of Beat 4.”
• Accepted quotes on a moveable storage filing system for the newly renovated Chancery Clerk’s office of $32,331 and a bid for financing for 36 months from People’s Bank and Trust at 2.39 percent, for $931.55 per month.
• Accepted a bid from Kirk Auto Company for $26,684 on a 4x4 F-150 pickup for Beat 4.
• Approved an interfund loan from the bridge fund to the nature trail fund for $60,000 for the trails in Vaiden and North Carrollton.
• Approved claims from Willis Engineering for $15,808 and $7,963.
