Parents of students in the Greenwood Leflore Consolidated School District will be able to register their children online for the upcoming school year.
The district’s board approved the plan during a meeting Tuesday and discussed it during an April 29 work session.
Dr. Mary Brown, superintendent, advocated online registration. “That helps us during the pandemic, but also it is just needed,” she said during the session.
“It will be a direct registration into our system, so it will be a speedier process.”
Parents likely will be able to upload PDF (portable document format) files or photos of documents required, for example, as proof of residency or vaccinations. To assist, the district is looking at setting up computers on some campuses for parents to use for registration.
The school board takes votes at meetings but not during work sessions. At the meeting, the board approved applications for grants that would help fund online distance learning and summer reading programs plus a course change for eighth graders. Until now, only ninth graders have been enrolled in Mississippi history and introduction to geography, but starting with the 2020-21 school year, those courses will be offered to students in grade 8.
The board voted to authorize the 2020-21 course selection guide for high school students, although Ro’Shaun Bailey, who represents District 4, dissented. He said later that the same electives — perhaps ROTC or art — are not available at each of the district’s three high schools.
One reason for this is a teacher at one school might be certified to teach a particular elective while another school might not have a teacher with the same certification.
During the work session, administrators assured Bailey that if a student wanted a course not offered at his or her school, arrangements would be made to allow the student to participate at a school that does offer it.
Explaining his no vote after the board meeting, Bailey said, “I think we ought to work towards courses being offered across the district since we are one district.”
The board also approved personnel employment recommendations and advertising for bids on leasing hunting and fishing rights to 41 acres of 16th Section land near Money. The board received safety and security donations of $500 each from Trustmark National Bank and the Bank of Commerce and presented Shaunteria Flowers, administrative assistant to the board and superintendent, with a certificate, flowers and balloons to honor her for professionalism and service. May 18-22 is the Mississippi School Boards Association’s School District Administrative Assistants and Board Clerks Appreciation Week.
The board met in closed session to discuss the job performance of an employee.
