The Greenwood School Board approved an $83,329 bid from Gardner’s Telephone Services on Thursday to purchase and install security equipment.
The funds will go toward swipe systems at doors and cameras at each of the district’s schools. “It is to enhance the security at each school site,” said Dr. Jennifer Wilson, the superintendent.
She said teachers will have cards to get them in and out of the school, and this will ensure that doors remain locked at all times. Cameras will also be placed outside doors.
The board also approved a salary increase for some classified employees for the 2018-2019 school year. Custodians, cafeteria workers, clerks and secretaries received a raise varying between 50 cents and $1 per hour.
In other school business:
•The board approved a memorandum of understanding between the district and Greenwood Leflore Hospital. The hospital will provide dental and vision services for specific students who meet its criteria.
•The board approved a $2,000 donation from the Bank of Commerce for Davis Elementary School. The money will go toward incentives such as Wal-Mart gift cards for students who meet their state test growth and proficiency targets.
•The board approved an effort, pending all necessary requirements, to recruit pre-K students outside of the district’s attendance zone that would help increase its enrollment. Wilson said she is in contact with different groups, such as the Mississippi Department of Education, to confirm that the district will be able to move forward with this initiative.
•It was reported that approximately 300 students districtwide participated in the extended-year program, which runs June 4-28.
•State assessments were administered at each school May 1-18.
“We should have preliminary scores by the end of the month based upon our state assessments,” Wilson said.
•The School Improvement Grant renewal applications were submitted on May 5 for Threadgill Elementary, Greenwood Middle and Greenwood High schools.
•The board will not meet again until July 26 unless a special meeting is called.
•The board went into executive session to discuss personnel matters. No action was taken.
