The Leflore County Democratic Executive Committee is expecting a good turnout for its 15th annual Beans & Greens Dinner Thursday night.
Jaqueline Amos, the executive field director of the state Democratic Party, will be the keynote speaker.
“The tickets are going really well. We’re expecting a crowd of about 200,” said Robert Sims, chairman of the committee.
This year’s theme is “Democrats Addressing the Challenges of Today’s Issues.”
Sims said other state Democratic Party officials — as well as local Democratic officials and candidates — are also expected to attend.
The event at the Leflore County Civic Center begins with a “Meet and Greet” reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by the dinner at 7 p.m.
The dinner is a major fundraiser for the party heading into the November general election.
The funds raised will be used to assist Democratic candidates as well as to conduct voter registration drives and voter education programs, Sims said. “We’re trying to galvanize our base for November.”
Encouraging support for Initiative 42, a proposed constitutional amendment designed to require full funding of public education, will also be part of the program, Sims said.
Three awards will be presented at the conclusion of the dinner.
The first will go to Amos. The two others — for community leaders — will be announced at the dinner, he said.
Tickets are $15 per person. They can be purchased in advance by contacting Sims at 453-2665 or 466-2465. They also will be available at the door on the night of the event.
Sims said he would personally deliver tickets to those who buy them in advance. “I’ll be just like the mailman. I’ll come to their house.”
