Greenwood Leflore Hospital will host next week a bake sale and cake auction to raise money for cancer research, prevention and education.
“We look forward to everyone coming out there and supporting the American Cancer Society,” said Christie Huff, the event chair.
The event is part of the annual Relay for Life of Leflore and Carroll Counties fundraising campaign, which culminates on April 13 with a walk at the Leflore County Civic Center, a different location from years past.
The last bake sale was held in 2013, and it raised $1,616 for the American Cancer Society, according to Christine Hemphill, the hospital’s physician liaison.
The bake sale and cake auction will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 30 in conference rooms 1A-B at the hospital.
“All items for the event are being donated by local individuals and businesses,” said Hemphill in an email. “Individual bags of grab-and-go baked items will be on sale while the goodies last. People should come early as they go fast.”
Larger baked items will be up for auction until 3 p.m., when the winners will be announced. The winners will be contacted if they are not present when the bidding ends, Hemphill said.
Donations will also be accepted at the bake sale to have a luminary bag decorated in memory of or in honor of someone who has battled cancer. The luminaria will illuminate the track at the Relay for Life walk.
“Each one represents a treasured relationship. They are our mothers, our fathers, our sisters, our brothers, our sons, our daughters, our friends and our loved ones,” Hemphill said. “As they glow throughout the night, they represent our shared vision for a cancer-free future.”
To donate baked goods, contact Hemphill at 451-7548 or chemphill@glh.org. There are no restrictions on the goods. Cakes and other desserts need to be brought to conference rooms 1A-B between 7:30 to 10 a.m. the day of the auction.
