ArtPlace Mississippi is still accepting applicants for its eight-week fall workshop, which will start Sept. 14.
The twice-a-week meetings will be from 4 to 6 p.m. at ArtPlace’s headquarters at 212 W. Washington St.
The registration deadline is Tuesday. Applicants may register online at www.artplacems.com or at ArtPlace headquarters.
The program consists of three classes: carpentry, led by Richard Elliott; sewing, led by Yolande van Heerden; and art and design, led by Robin Whitfield.
The art and design class and the sewing class will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the carpentry class will be held Mondays and Thursdays.
Sewing is open to students from 12 to 18 years of age. Carpentry and art and design are open to students 14 to 18.
Each applicant will be briefly interviewed, said Hart Henson, ArtPlace’s executive director.
In 2014, the workshop was sponsored by the Mississippi Development Authority. This year, local businesses and individuals are covering the costs, Henson said.
The art and design class will include painting, drawing, lettering and graphic designs. It will cover elemental concepts such as measuring, scale and proportion. It is hoped that the students will be able to make note cards that can be sold locally.
“For me, I just love the energy of young people,” Whitfield said.
She particularly likes that the workshop draws students from all over — both black and white.
“Making something together is a good way to get to know one another,” she said.
Van Heerden said she hopes many of the students who attended the two previous workshops return.
“It’s been wonderful. I’ve had students email me during the summer break. They are raring to go,” she said.
Newcomers will work on what van Heerden calls “Delta pillows,” which will be personalized by each student. Each pillow will be made from scrap pieces of cloth. Those returning for a third session will work on dresses.
Sewing is not taught in schools anymore, but “the sky is the limit when you know how to sew,” she said.
