More than 40 artists will display and sell their work downtown on Sept. 18 during Main Street Greenwood’s annual Art Alfresco.
The event will be held from 5 to 8 p.m.
The event is free and open to the public. Guests are welcome to visit the different shops, browse the exhibits and enjoy the complimentary drinks and hors d’oeuvres provided by each merchant.
“It’s a great opportunity for the community to support our local artists,” said Lise Foy, executive director of Main Street.
All Main Street members are invited to participate. This year, two new businesses have signed on — Edward Jones and the Episcopal Church of the Nativity.
Many forms of art will be on display, including acrylics, water color, mixed media, photography, metal, oils, sculpture, jewelry, pottery and pencil drawings.
Also, live music will be performed throughout the evening.
Outside along Howard Street, pianist Brandi Ward will perform on the 200 block, while blues/jazz musician Jerry Fair will be on the 300 block.
Also, musician Danny Abraham will perform at The Alluvian and blues artist Terry Harmonica Bean will appear at Smith and Co.
In conjunction with Art Alfresco, Turnrow Book Co. will host a book signing and reception with Gary Walters and Hayden Hooper starting at 5 p.m.
Walters, a native of Jackson whose father is from Greenwood, will launch his new book, “Delta Dreamin’,” a collection of his watercolor landscapes.
“A lot of people have been asking about a book by him, so it’s been long anticipated,” said Jamie Kornegay, owner of Turnrow.
Walters will sign copies of his book and have some of his work on display at the bookstore.
Hooper, a native of Indianola, will sign copies of her new children’s book, “Gabriel’s Garden,” which she both wrote and illustrated. The book is based on the true story of some children who transformed their neighborhood playground to make it accessible for children with disabilities.
Another special event during Art Alfresco will be an open house at the Viking-owned K & B Apartments. The three new apartments, which are in the Klein Blumenthal building above Beard + Riser Design on Main Street, will be open to the public for viewing throughout the evening.
Members of the ASTRA Club, an organization for teenage girls sponsored by Altrusa International of Greenwood, will serve as hostesses for the event. The girls will pass out Art Alfresco programs and provide directions to the various locations.
