Ninety Amanda Elzy High School seniors received their diplomas during graduation ceremonies Wednesday.
The commencement took place inside the Leflore County Civic Center.
The valedictorian is Jennifer E. Mukoro, the daughter of Dr. Saliba and Mrs. Dorah Mukoro. She graduated with a 95.2 cumulative grade-point average.
Mukoro plans to attend the University of Mississippi and major in biology and biochemistry.
During her high school career, Mukoro was active in the National Beta Club, the Student Council Association, the Future Business Leaders of America, the 4-H Club, the National Honor Society and the Academic Decathlon Team. She also was a member of several athletic teams, including the basketball team, the track team and the softball team.
The salutatorian is James Edward Thurmond. The son of Ophelia House-Gaston, Thurmond plans to attend Mississippi State University and major in computer engineering and graphic design.
Thurmond was an honor student from the first grade through the 12th. He was a Principal’s Scholar, an Honor Roll Scholar and a Superintendent’s Scholar. In addition to those honors, he was a member of the Beta Club, the National Honor Society, the National Technical Honor Society and the Academic Decathlon Team.
The 2008-2009 graduating class of Amanda Elzy High had 30 honor students.
“If you expect to have what you’ve never had, you must be willing to do what you’ve never done” was the class motto.
Class officers were Randi Banks, president; Timothy Peoples, vice president; Alexandria Webb, secretary; Shecorey Allen, assistant secretary; Jasmine Cage, treasurer; and Oscar Brown and Vontarris McPherson, sergeants-at-arms.
