Two young men were still in the Leflore County Jail this morning in connection with a pair of shootings in South Greenwood last week.
Denarrius Stigler, 19, 618 Pine St., was arrested on Thursday evening, the day of the shootings, and charged Monday with three counts of attempted aggravated assault.
Quaterious Carr, 17, 700 E. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, Apt. C, was arrested early Friday morning and charged Monday with two counts of accessory after the fact.
“We are looking at some other individuals,” said Ray Moore, Greenwood police chief. “More arrests are expected.”
Last week’s incidents are the latest in a rash of gun-related violence in Greenwood and Leflore County that has claimed seven lives since the first of the year. Some of the victims have been as young as 15.
Around 5 p.m. Thursday, a volley of gunfire rang out from the Parkway Place cluster of single-family homes, not far from Whittington Park. More than a dozen shots could be heard going off in the 1600 block of Alla Court.
Officers arrived on the scene and discovered several houses had been hit and numerous shell casings were the area. Moore previously said one person of interest was developed on the scene and taken into custody.
Moore declined to name the type of weapon used in what appeared to be a drive-by shooting.
Officers then received a call at 7:48 p.m. that shots were fired in the western area of McLaurin Street and Roosevelt Avenue. Officers were also notified that two gunshot victims were taken to Greenwood Leflore Hospital.
One person was shot in the lower part of the leg, and the other person was hit in the knee. Moore declined to provide more information about the victims.
At that point, officers received more information as to possible suspects and learned that the same vehicle was spotted at both incidents, according to Moore.
Then, at 11:30 p.m., police received a call that a vehicle was on fire in the Curtis Moore Apartments area.
Officers discovered that the vehicle on fire matched the description of the vehicle that had been involved in the other two shootings.
Moore said today that Stigler was involved in the Alla Court shooting, and Carr was involved in the McLaurin Street and Roosevelt Avenue shooting.
