VAIDEN — Vaiden Mayor Melvin Hawthorne said this morning he has called a special meeting of the town’s Board of Aldermen tonight to discuss the arrest of Police Chief Allen Vance.
Hawthorne said Vance had been charged with arson on insured property and conspiracy to commit such arson, both involving a vehicle. He said Vance turned himself in to the Grenada Police Department, where he is also an officer, on Monday and is out on $30,000 bond — $15,000 on each charge.
The special board meeting will be at 6:30 tonight. Hawthorne said the board will meet in executive session to discuss the arrest as well as other personnel matters. He said a court date has been set for July.
Hawthorne said he learned of the charges against Vance from Grenada Police Chief James Fox. The charges came out of the Mississippi Attorney General’s Office.
Vance has been chief since September 2010.
