Police are seeking a suspect in an aggravated assault in Itta Bena.
Around noon Sunday, Itta Bena Police responded to gunfire that left James Stamps with a gunshot wound in the leg. The victim, 31, was shot in the leg in the parking lot of the H and H club. He was transported to Greenwood Leflore Hospital, where he was treated. He was then taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson for surgery.
According to Itta Bena Police Chief Robert Kirklin, police have a lead on a suspect and expect to arrest him today. The suspect, whose name was not released, is 29 years old.
Another man, Jarvis Billups, 25, was arrested Sunday and charged with accessory before and after the fact. Kirklin said Billups drove the suspect to the scene of the shooting. Billups is being held in the Leflore County Jail.
Both Stamps and the suspect in the case have lengthy criminal backgrounds, Kirklin said.
“They’re loaded with criminal backgrounds,” he said. “They could burn a computer up with charges.”
Kirklin said Stamps is in and out of jail constantly on charges related to shootings and firearms.
The suspect is also a convicted felon.
The police chief said the two men involved in the shooting had an altercation on Saturday.
The Leflore County Sheriff’s Office is also involved with the investigation.
