The Greenwood Police Department made a series of arrests Wednesday on charges ranging from burglary to grand larceny auto and felony receiving stolen property, Chief Henry Purnell said.
Police have charged Ernest Sibley, 54, 3140 McKennedy Drive, with the April 11 burglary of an apartment in the 200 block of West McLaurin Street.
“The complainant went downstairs to smoke a cigarette. When he went back up, his apartment door was open,” Purnell said.
Sibley is accused of taking multiple DVD players from the apartment as well as individual DVDs.
According to the chief, Sibley was noticed on the landing outside the apartment with the items in a bag. The victim recovered the items at that time.
Purnell said the apartment resident only recently filed charges against Sibley. Sibley remained in the Leflore County Jail this morning. Bond was set at $20,000.
Purnell said police on Wednesday also made an arrest in the Sept. 25 theft of an automobile from Mike Turner Auto Sales. The suspect, Earnest Bell, 45, 409 McGehee St., remained in the Leflore County Jail this morning.
Bond had not yet been set.
“A witness saw Bell take the car. The witness followed the vehicle and called the police,” the chief said.
At some point Bell was able to lose the witness who was tailing him. By the time police had caught up with him, he had ditched the car.
Charges were filed against Bell, and he was picked up by the Leflore County Sheriff’s Department on Wednesday in an unrelated incident, the chief said.
In the third case, Quinton J. Williams, 23, 624 Mimosa St. has been charged with felony receipt of stolen property.
He remained in the Leflore County Jail this morning. Bond was set at $5,000.
The chief said Williams brought an Arctic Cat four-wheeler into a repair shop for repair on Sept. 25.
The shop owner became suspicious when he examined the damage to the ATV. He then contacted the police.
Officers went to the shop and checked the ATV’s vehicle identification number with the National Crime Information Center database and discovered the vehicle had been reported stolen, Purnell said.
Police staked out the shop, and when Williams came in on Oct. 12 he was arrested. Purnell said Williams told officers he was the owner of the $4,500 ATV.
