The Mississippi Highway Patrol was busy Friday night hunting for impaired drivers in Leflore County.
Troopers made 11 arrests in the county, including eight DUIs and several drug charges.
“We had an extra detail in Leflore County last night,” said Trooper Tony Dunn, public affairs officer for Troop D, which covers Leflore and nine other counties. “We bring extra troopers into counties where we’re having some problems. Leflore County is one of the places that we’ve been having more wrecks than usual.”
Dunn said the Highway Patrol has been deploying extra details to different counties about two or three times a month to clamp down on speeding and drunk driving.
“We’re kind of short-handed, so we try to bring some extra guys in to try to bring things back in control,” Dunn said. “When people know we’re short-handed, they tend to speed and drink and drive more, so we try to surprise them with an extra detail.”
Those arrested by the Mississippi Highway Patrol on Friday night and early Saturday morning were:

nJames Stovall, 21, 376 County Road 366, Lot 9, DUI, improper equipment, no liability insurance, released on bond.
nMelvin Ford, 58, 309 Young St., DUI, released on bond.
nMelvin Robinson, 21, 31 E. Jackson St., Belzoni, possession of marijuana in a motor vehicle, released on bond.
nKendrick Brooks, 20, 31 Ryan St., Apt. A8, Belzoni, possession of marijuana in a motor vehicle, released on bond.
nJangelo Robinson, 21, 618 Fisk St. Apt. A, Belzoni, possession of marijuana in a motor vehicle, no liability insurance, driving without a license, DUI, released on bond.
nTobias Gowdy, 20, 407 Fisher St., possession of marijuana in a motor vehicle, released on bond.
nLee Howers Hamrick, 24, 409 Lincoln Ave., DUI, released on bond.
