A Morgan City man was being held on two counts of aggravated assault today after a shooting early Sunday at an Itta Bena nightclub.
Jamieson Larvette Mitchell, 27, 106 Southworth St., remained in the Leflore County Jail this morning. Bond had not been set.
Leflore County Sheriff Ricky Banks said the shooting occurred at Roomer’s Nightclub around 1 a.m. The names of the victims were not known this morning.
“We got a call that there had been a shooting at the club and a couple of people had been hit,” he said.
Two victims, one shot in the arm and the other shot in the leg, were found when deputies arrived. The victims said Mitchell had fired the shots.
Mitchell had been seen in the nightclub before the shooting, Banks said.
Deputies found Mitchell walking alongside U.S. 82 afterward. A handgun and some shell casings were recovered Sunday.
Mitchell told the authorities he had gotten into a fight at the nightclub and went to a vehicle outside, where he retrieved a handgun. It was not clear today whether Mitchell drove his own car to the club or came with a friend, the sheriff said.
Banks said Mitchell told investigators that he initially fired the gun in the air in an attempt to scare off his attackers. When that didn’t work, he fired into the crowd, the sheriff said.
Banks said he was securing statements from the victims today.
Under state law, Mitchell could receive a maximum of 20 years in prison on each count of aggravated assault.
Roomer’s was formally known as the Red Carpet. In the past, the sheriff has said that troublesome nightclubs in the county often shut down and reopen under a new name.
