Over the summer, Greenwood resident Lora Evans and four members of her family competed against another family for a cash prize on the popular game show “Family Feud.”
Friends will be able to see how they did when the show airs Thursday, at 9 a.m. on WABG-6 and at 6 p.m. on WNBD-2.
“My mother-in-law and sister-in-law watch it all the time, and I watch it, too,” Evans said. “We would say to each other, ‘We can be that family.’”
After auditioning in November 2012 in Atlantic City, N.J., the family received a postcard a month later announcing that they would be considered for a spot on the show.
“Just seeing that postcard with the ‘Family Feud’ logo, I was so excited,” Evans said.
Later they were told that they had been selected. Filming took place in June.
Evans was accompanied by her brother-in-law, Fred Cornell, and her sister-in-law, Marcia Evans, who are both from Greenwood but now reside in Bristow, Va.; and her niece, Amina Evans, and Cornell’s cousin, Kennie Edwards, both of the Bristow, Va., area.
“I was nervous about being on the show, but it is a lot of fun,” Evans said.
The show is based in Atlanta and hosted by comedian Steve Harvey.
“(Harvey) was funny even during the taping,” Evans said. “It was almost like a comedy show. It would be fun just to be in the audience of ‘Family Feud.’”
The show premiered in 1976. During the game, two families battle each other to name the most common responses to a survey question posed to 100 people. The first family that earns 300 points gets a chance to win a cash prize.
“It is entertaining. Seeing Steve and trying to win, it was overwhelming,” said Evans. “We got to know the other family. The family we competed against was friendly. Competition was there, but it was a relaxed atmosphere. We were both hoping to win.”
Evans has been a member of the Greenwood School Board for three years. She is also the executive director for Delta Hills Health, which is part of Greenwood Leflore Hospital.
“I would do it again or just go to sit in the audience,” Evans said.
