It’s only October, but the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce is already gearing up for the 77th annual Roy Martin Delta Band Festival and Christmas Parade on Nov. 30.
Spectators can expect to see an array of colorful floats parade through downtown Greenwood and hear numerous high school and college bands fill the night with cheery holiday tunes.
This year’s parade theme is “Christmas Around the World,” with floats representing a variety of countries.
“The parade has such a rich tradition in Greenwood and in the Delta,” said Beth Stevens, Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce executive director. “All other Delta communities plan their parades around ours here in Greenwood. We’re excited to be the trendsetter.”
The chamber is still working on the band list, but Stevens said they expect bands all the way from Arkansas, Tennessee and Louisiana.
Parade entries are welcomed and include floats, walking/performing units, mascots, bands and beauties. No vehicles will be allowed in the parade except those approved by the chamber. Entries may be made in person at the chamber or online at www.greenwoodmschamber.com.
Call the chamber at 453-4152 to see what countries have been taken and to reserve a country.
Floats must be in place and ready to be judged at 1 p.m. on parade day in downtown Greenwood. The parade will begin promptly at 4 p.m.
Floats may be no taller than 13 feet in order to pass under electrical lines and Keesler Bridge. Walkers may pass out candy and goodies along the parade route, but riders are not allowed to throw candy or other items from the floats.
No Santa Claus other than the chamber’s Santa may be entered in the parade.
The parade is funded mostly by community contributions. To send a contribution to this year’s event, mail it to the Greenwood-Leflore County Chamber of Commerce at P.O. Box 848, Greenwood, MS 38935.
Also, on the night before the parade, Main Street Greenwood and the chamber will partner to host a free outdoor holiday movie night. This year’s movie, “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” will start at 7 p.m. at 222 Howard St.
“Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy a night of fun for the whole family,” Stevens said.
Hot chocolate and holiday treats will be for sale.
