Some 41 youngsters from Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana along with their camp leaders and instructors will perform in a concert Sunday at the Salvation Army’s Chapel.
The concert, featuring band and vocal music, will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the church, which is at 209 N. Stone Ave. The event is free and open to the public.
Retired Salvation Army Maj. James Deuel is organizing the hourlong concert.
Deuel, 82, is the grandfather of the Greenwood Salvation Army’s current commander, Lt. Benjamin Deuel, who is in Mexico with his wife, Lt. Wendy Deuel, and the couple’s three children.
The extended Deuel family has a long association with Greenwood.
Deuel and his wife, Evelyn, also a retired major, were stationed in Greenwood 46 years ago as captains.
Their son, Maj. James Deuel Jr. and his wife, Jean, served here 20 years ago as captains.
“Many say that the Salvation Army has some of the finest brass bands in the world, but even the best musicians start as beginners. We have to learn how it is done and how to make music together,” Deuel said.
The Army conducts a summer music program at its camp in Lexington, and that is where the youngsters will be coming from for Sunday’s performance, Deuel said.
In addition, he said, the concert will also provide “rhythm studies” for those interested in learning more about music.
“I would hope to get a real good turnout,” Deuel said.
