A Sidon woman, apparently crossing U.S. 82 Tuesday night near Cypress Avenue, was struck and killed by an automobile around 8 p.m.
Sharon Jean Smith, 52, 100 W. Church St., was pronounced dead at the scene by Leflore County Coroner Debra Sanders.
The car that hit Smith, a 1998 Ford Taurus, was driven by Tremell Streeter, 44, 307 Bowie Lane, according to Acting Police Chief Johnny Langdon.
Langdon said Smith was struck in a westbound lane at the intersection of U.S. 82 and Cypress Avenue.
Streeter told officers he was traveling west in the right lane. When he neared Cypress Avenue, Smith — whom Streeter said he did not see — walked out in front of his car. Streeter estimated he was traveling 45 to 50 mph.
According to the incident report, officers believed there was no malice or criminal intent on the part of Streeter. However, he was taken to Greenwood Leflore Hospital to have a blood sample drawn in order to determine if alcohol was a factor.
The department was awaiting a toxicology report from the Mississippi Crime Lab.
This is the second pedestrian struck on U.S. 82 in less than two months.
On Aug. 29, Letha Triplett, 52, was struck and seriously injured at the intersection of U.S. 82 and Mississippi 430. Triplett is still hospitalized at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. The driver of the vehicle in that incident, Kendal Paul Honea, 43, of Rogers, Ark., was charged with DUI.
