A Greenwood man who allegedly killed his live-in girlfriend and then shot himself today has died, police said.
David Lee Jefferson, 23, was found shot in the head near the scene of the fatal shooting Rosita Cage, 30.
The death of Cage “appears to be a domestic violence situation,” Police Chief Ray Moore said.
It is the 13th homicide of the year in Leflore County.
Officers received a call reporting shots fired at about 4 a.m. and arrived minutes later at the 100 block of Oak Street to find Cage lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds.
Coroner Debra Sanders said Cage died at the scene.
According to Moore, Cage had been staying with Jefferson at his home at 110 Oak Street.
According to a police report, a witness reported seeing Jefferson shoot Cage outside, then retreat to the interior of his home. Officers tried to make contact with Jefferson, then heard a single gunshot from inside. They breeched the door and found Jefferson in a back bedroom with a gunshot wound to the head. He was rushed to Greenwood Leflore Hospital.
Moore said Jefferson was declared brain dead at the hospital, but was left on life support until a unit from Jackson could harvest viable organs.
According to Sanders, the official time of death was 10:44 a.m.
Moore said police are still investigating but have no indication that anyone else was involved in either shooting.
