A nurse fatally stabbed on Sunday in her home was a hard worker and a caring person, her employer’s president said this morning.
Lakeyla Foreman Broom, a 29-year-old mother of three, was an excellent nurse, said Clara Reed, president of Mid-Delta Home Health & Hospice.
“She cared about her patients. She cared about her peers. She cared as if it was her business,” Reed said.
Services for Broom will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Greater Harvest Worship Center.
Broom’s husband, Edward, 32, was also stabbed. He was treated at Greenwood Leflore Hospital and released.
No arrests have been made. The investigation is continuing, said Greenwood Police Chief Ray Moore.
Broom, a registered nurse, had worked for the home health company for about three months. Reed said Broom quickly became familiar with the operation of the company’s Greenwood office and was part of a staff of between 10 and 15 people.
“She wanted everything to be done according to policy,” Reed said. “In the office, if there were assignments to be done, she’d volunteer to do them. She didn’t have any hesitation.”
She said Broom had a “wonderful work ethic” and was a leader bound for greater things.
Reed said she and Broom’s colleagues have been broken up about the death and the hole that it leaves in Broom’s young family.
“I hurt especially for her parents and for her babies,” Reed said.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday at Sanders & Sanders Funeral Home and from 9:30 a.m. Saturday until the services at the church. Burial will be in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
Anyone with information on the stabbing is asked to call Greenwood-Leflore-Carroll Crime Stoppers Inc. at 1-888-222-TIPS (8477) or the Greenwood Police Department at 453-3311.
