A man charged with first-degree murder in the 2014 death of his wife is awaiting arraignment in Leflore County Circuit Court.
Edward Broom, 34, who now lives in Manhattan, Kansas, was charged in the death of Lakeyla Foreman Broom, who was found stabbed to death in their Greenwood home on Sept. 21, 2014.
Greenwood Police Chief Ray Moore said Tuesday that the Riley County, Kansas, Police Department arrested Edward Broom after receiving a fax of the Leflore County grand jury indictment.
“He waived extradition back to Mississippi. I sent two officers up there Sunday to transport him back. He was back in Leflore County about 10 o’clock (Monday) night,” Moore said Tuesday.
Police found Lakeyla Broom’s body in the bedroom of their home on West President Avenue after receiving a 911 call from a male who said he had been tied up and stabbed.
Lakeyla Broom had been stabbed 64 times. Officers found Edward Broom tied up with a cut on his forehead.
Moore said Broom was always a suspect, but it took time to build evidence to charge him using DNA and phone records. Based on the number of wounds, he said, it appears the motive for the killing was “rage,” but “exactly what set it off, we’re not sure.”
Moore said the search for additional suspects is continuing: “We’re investigating several leads.”
