A Greenwood man was airlifted to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson after being shot Sunday night.
Greenwood Police Chief Ray Moore said that 36-year-old Marcus Purnell was in the Intensive Care Unit this morning. A spokesperson at UMMC said Purnell did not appear on the public patient registry. His condition was not known.
The shooting occurred around 11 p.m. Sunday in the 700 block of Howard Street, Moore said.
“We had an officer at the Double Quick on Main, and the victim came up to him and said he’d been shot,” Moore said.
Purnell was hit once in the chest and had four more hits on his extremities, according to the report.
Moore said police went to the scene and recovered numerous shell casings. The weapon in question appears to be .45-caliber, he said.
Several people in the neighborhood reported hearing shots but were not able to identify the shooter or a vehicle. Police are waiting for a more thorough statement from the victim, who was not able to give them much information, the chief said.
